The five stories about the Minerva Club are among the best Canning ever wrote, and certainly the funniest. The club itself is a "gentleman's club" in London's West End, the sort of place where you might meet a Richard Hannay or a Lord Peter Wimsey ... except that in this case the entry qualification is to have served a prison sentence of two years or more. It is not a club for gentlemen.
