This is one of several stories which appeared in the This Week supplement to a number of North American newspapers, but does not seem to have been published in Britain.
The narrator's grandfather tells how his father, Thomas Ancaster, wooed Arabella, the daughter of the West Indian shipping magnate who owned the small cargo vessel of which he was the captain. On a voyage to the West Indies a fire breaks out, the crew abandon ship, and Tom and Arabella are alone in the last lifeboat. Victorian convention must battle with love and ambition.
