Star Stuff

Short Story (2,210 words)

The narrator is assistant to the famous black-and-white film producer Otto Heldmaster, and tells how he accidentally launched the film star Tania Lamont on her career. One night after dinner with the producer, he is approached by a woman who wants him to get her a part and will pay 2000 for his help. He works out a scheme that seems perfect, but will it succeed?

Canning had considerable experience of the world of film and TV production, and writes very convincingly of this milieu.

Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, March 1962.

Included in the collection Comedies and Whimsies, ed. John Higgins, 2007.
